The lifestyles, languages, religions, customs, and traditions of a specific group of people or region.

The man works in the field all day.
After work he smokes all night around the fire with friends.
He travels a lot to the cities and different villages.
The wife stays home with the children.

Leisure Activities:
Some of the sports that they play are; tennis, golf, riding, rowing, sailing, water skiing, hunting, fishing, soccer, pole fighting, and swimming.
Soccer is the most popular sport in the country.
Swimming is close to second and is almost the national sport.

Dating and Marriage:
Marriage is the most important thing in the people's lives.
In some villages cousins will marry each other.
It takes men years of hard work to win a woman.
Weddings are followed by a feast.
Low class families will go into debt because of the family.
If women are widowed they will marry within the family.
To be able to divorce their wife they have to say "I divorce thee" three times.
The wife puts her husband before all including her children.

The Koran is the sacred scripture of the Islam faith.
The Koran is the words of Allah through the prophet Mohamad.
It is displayed on a decorated table and is never to touch the floor.
Muslims are expected to pray five times a day.

Arabic is the national language of Egypt and has nine dialects.
Arabic has twenty eight symbols and is read left to right.
You can tell by the way they speak where they are from- North and South.
Read right to left from top to bottom.

They drew on tombs and temple drawings.
They drew people and animals along with glass figures and jewelry made from gold and semi precious stones.
Art on the walls and pillars are the most popular kind of art.
On them they tell stories of people and their daily lives.
They also tell their deceased family how to meet the gods.
They are sketched with charcoal and later add color to add to the picture.
Statues are also very common and are important to the culture.
They were statues of kings, queens, scribes, animals and gods/ goddesses.

Most Egyptian music is used for their religious rituals.
Music in the North peninsula has a Celtic influence.
The percussion, string, and wind instruments are the most commonly used in Egyptian music.

Cultural Patterns:
Some of Egypt's cultural patterns come from Japan and Western Civilizations. However, they make some of their own customs too.

Lunch- Mid-afternoon (Main Meal):
-Stuffed pigeons
Early Evening Snack:
-Veggie Patties
-Tomato Salad
-Lemon Juice
-Taheena- Sesame Paste
-Falafel- Fried Veggie Balls
-Stuffed Qubergine
Fooll Mudammes

  • 3 tablespoons oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1/4-1/2 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander or more if you like
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 (15 ounce) can fava beans, drained


1. Heat oil, add onion and cook for about 4 minutes.
2. Add tomato sauce, spices and salt, cook for 2-3 minutes.
3. Add fava beans, and mash it on low heat.
4. You can mash it finely or leave some fava beans whole.
5. Cover and cook for 5 more minutes.
6. Serve with pita bread.
7. You can drizzle some olive oil, tahini, lemon, or a combination on it before serving.
